Canon announces EOS 7D Mark II and other cameras & lenses

Canon has launched the EOS 7D Mark II, PowerShot G7 X, N2, SX60 HS and three new lenses.The “Flag Off” event also showcased the PowerShot SX400 IS, SX520 HS and camera bags that were announced earlier this summer.

The Canon EOS 7D Mark II will be available in Singapore from early November 2014 at Canon authorised dealers at the following recommended prices.

The highlight of the event was the EOS 7D Mark II which was unveiled in conjunction with the global announcement at Photokina 2014 in Cologne, Germany.

The EOS 7D Mark II is the much anticipated successor to the EOS 7D, and features a 20.2-megapixel CMOS sensor with Dual Pixel Phase AF, high-speed continuous shooting of up to 10 frames per second (fps), and a 65-point all-cross-type Autofocus system.

The APS-C DSLR sports dual DIGIC 6 image processors and ISO up to 16,000 (expandable to 51,200); with shutter release cycle rated to 200,000, up from 150,000 in its predecessor.

The camera weighs 820g (body only), has built-in GPS, and comes with double memory card slots for CF and SD cards.

It is expected to go on sale in the US in November for US$1,799 (body only) or US$2,149 (with EF-S 18-135MM f/3.5-5.6 IS STM kit lens).

Three new lenses

Canon also introduced three new lenses for its EOS DSLRs.

  • EF400mm f/4 DO IS II USM third-generation super-telephoto Diffractive Optics (DO) lens (US$6,899 in November).
  • EF-S24mm f/2.8 STM “pancake” wide-angle lens (US$149 in November).
  • EF24-105mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM zoom lens (US$599 in December).

PowerShot G7 X

The PowerShot G7 X is Canon’s first compact with a 1-inch image sensor, putting it head-to-head against the pricier Sony RX100 III.

The 20.2-megapixel premium compact camera has a 24-100mm lens with bright f/1.8-2.8 maximum aperture range.

ZoomPlus technology doubles its optical zoom from 4.2x to 8.4x while maintaining image quality.

The 304g PowerShot G7 X sports a 31-point AF system and a touchscreen LCD that can be flipped 180 degrees to face forward for a selfie.

It comes with DIGIC 6 image processor and also ships with NFC and built-in Wi-Fi.

Available in US in October at US$699.

The 16-megapixel PowerShot SX60 HS boasts the world’s longest optical zoom at 65x, which can be extended using ZoomPlus to 130x.

The compact shooter has a 1/2.3-inch image sensor.

Equipped with NFC and built-in WiFi, the PowerShot SX60 HS will be available in Singapore from end September 2014 at S$679.

The PowerShot N2 also has a 1/2.3-inch image sensor, and replaces the PowerShot N retaining much of its predecessor’s design.

With greater resolution at 16 megapixels, the PowerShot N2 has the same 28-224mm lens as the PowerShot N and sport the same zoom and shutter control rings around the lens – but now the shutter can be released in any direction.

Its new 180-degrees tilt touchscreen LCD can be tilted to face forward for selfies.

The PowerShot N2 comes with NFC and built-in WiFi.

It is priced at S$399 with availability TBA.

PowerShot SX520 HS and SX400 IS

These two 16-megapixel telephoto compacts were announced in end July and are already available in Singapore.

The SX520 HS (S$419) has a 24-1008mm 42x optical zoom lens that can be extended to 84x with Canon’s ZoomPlus technology.

The SX400 IS (S$249) has a 24-720mm 30x optical zoom lens that can be extended to 60x using ZoomPlus.

Canon also showcased its first line-up of camera bags with prices ranging from S$9.90 to S$289.
