It’s Hari Raya Haji. The festival is also known as Eid al-Adha in Arabic, which means Feast/Festival of the Sacrifice.

This is an important religious holiday celebrated by Muslims all over the world to honour the willingness of the prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) to sacrifice his young first-born son Ismail (Ishmael) to prove his loyalty to Allah’s will, and his son’s acceptance to being sacrificed.

Allah eventually intervened and provided Abraham with a lamb to sacrifice in place of his son.

As part of the celebrations, Muslims slaughter sheep, goats and cows in remembrance of Ibrahim’s act of obedience, and distribute the meat to family, relatives and the less fortunate in the community.

Selamat Hari Raya Haji!
