Holiday Greetings: Boxing Day 2022

It’s Boxing Day and the second day of Christmas. Spare a thought for those who have been of service to you.

These two cheery “Gingerbread” couple welcomed us at the Church of St Peter and St Paul when we were returning to our cottage in the Cotswolds after dark and decided to take a walk around the village. This photo was taken with a Huawei Mate 50 Pro smartphone.

Boxing Day is a public holiday in many countries celebrating the day after Christmas.

According to Wikipedia, “though it originated as a holiday to give gifts to poor people, today Boxing Day forms part of Christmas celebrations, with many people choosing to take advantage of Boxing Day sales”.

The Oxford English Dictionary gives the earliest attestation from Britain in 1743, defining it as “the day after Christmas day”, and saying “traditionally on this day tradespeople, employees, etc., would receive presents or gratuities in the form of “Christmas Boxes” from their customers or employers.”
