New Arrival and Review: Google Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro

Google Pixel 6 (S$999) and Google Pixel 6 Pro (S$1,299) have arrived in Singapore. They are now available exclusively on the Google Store online, together with a selection of phone cases and accessories.

Google Singapore had sent me both the Pixel 6 Pro and the Pixel 6 to try out prior to today’s launch, so I’ve been playing with both phones for a while now.

Both the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro ship with Android 12 installed and come with 128GB storage.

Powered by Android 12, Google has given the new phones a new user interface (UI) they call “Material Me”, which provides themed UI skins and widgets that are supposed to be highly customised to your you needs.

The Google Pixel 6 Pro is available in Stormy Black and Cloudy White with cases (S$49) in Stormy Sky, Soft Sage, Light Frost and Golden Glow.

The phones are powered by Google Tensor, the company’s first processor that’s basically a mobile system on a chip designed specifically around Google’s AI engine.

Google Tensor enables entirely new capabilities for your smartphone, and makes Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro more helpful and more personal.

The Google Pixel 6 is available in Stormy Black and Sorta Seafoam with cases (S$49) in Stormy Sky, Light Rain and Cotton Candy.

The Titan M2 chip works with Tensor security core to protect sensitive user data, PINs and passwords.

Google has extended its support window to at least five years of security updates.

Both the Google Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro feature a Camera Bar at the rear of the cameras. The camera bar protrudes from the back of the phone, but with the included phone case, the rear of the phone becomes more or less flat.

Both the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro have a new 1/1.3-inch sensor, with the primary sensor now capturing up to one and half times more light than the Pixel 5a.

Both phones also get a new ultrawide lens with larger sensors as well.

Tranquil morning at Lower Seletar Reservoir in Singapore. Trying out the camera on the Google Pixel 6 Pro at 0.7x, 1x, 2x and 4x optical zoom. Handheld and unedited.

The Pixel 6 Pro has an extra telephoto lens with 4x optical zoom which you can dial up to 20x zoom with an improved version of Super Res Zoom.

Camera software wise, there’s the Magic Eraser for quickly removing photobombs and distractions in photos through simple tapping; as well as Motion Mode which includes Action Pan and Long Exposure.

Using the Magic Eraser feature in the Google Pixel 6 to easily remove the orange buoy in the water. Taken handheld at 4x optical zoom.

Action Pan simulates a panning shot where the subject stays in focus while the background is motion-blurred, while Long Exposure applies motion blurs to a moving subject in the photo.

Google is also pretty proud of Real Tone – their algorithm for improving skin tones – regardless of skin colour – in photos.

Trying out the Action Pan feature in the Google Pixel 6 & Pixel 6 Pro to keep a moving subject in focus while blurring the background. Got it right on the first try. Really easy to use.

This is built into the basic image processing algo and cannot be removed – the results have been pretty pleasing so far from the portraits that I’ve shot.

Google has also improved on its Google Assistant in simplifying certain commands without having to preface them with “Hey Google” or “Ok Google”, such as to “stop” or “snooze” alarms, or when to “accept” or “decline” calls.

Using the Long Exposure feature in the Google Pixel 6 & Pixel 6 Pro to blur the cars on the road while the main subject a bollard (or someone posing in a portrait shot) stays in focus.

There’s also Live Translate which translates messages you receive in a foreign language right within your messaging app.

Note that a charger is not included in the box, although with a compatible 30W USB-C charger, the Pixels can be charged up to 50% charge in around 30 minutes.

My friend in the US was telling me about this subscription thing she uses with her Pixel 6 that gives her access to all of Google’s paid services. Some kind of pass. Is that available in Singapore?

    • tech4tea says:

That’s the Pixel Pass that your friend was referring to. It provides Google services in one easy subscription for a single monthly subscription. You’ll get a new Pixel with an upgrade after two years as well as device protection. Google One keeps your photos and files safe with 200 GB of storage and automatic phone backup. And you can play ad-free YouTube videos, music, and games with YouTube Premium, YouTube Music Premium, and Google Play Pass. Unfortunately it’s only available in the US and not in Singapore.

How do you like the new Pixels personally? I’m considering the Pixel 6.

    • tech4tea says:

I think if you’re looking for a flagship phone for your daily use – work, photography, social media etc, either of these phones rock. I have been using the Pixel 4 for the past 2 years plus and is considering upgrading to the Pixel 6 Pro.

      • Lee Xiong Guan says:

Cool! I haven’t tried a Pixel before. Thanks for your review. I’m just trying to decide whether to splash an additional $300 to go for the pro version.

        • tech4tea says:

Size-wise, they’re roughly the same 6.4” vs 6.7”. The Pixel 6 Pro has 4x telephoto optical zoom compared to the 2x on the Pixel 6, and it has an ultrawide front selfie camera with 94 degree FOV for wefies. So if photography is important to you like for me, I’d go for the Pro. Otherwise the Pixel 6 is just as good.

          • Lee Xiong Guan says:

Thanks for your advice! I suppose if the phone can last for more than 2 years (like your Pixel 4), the additional $300 is actually ok. I’m not big into photography, but from your shots, the additional 4x zoom actually makes a difference!

            Well, Happy Shopping!!!
