StarHub’s name for the router is the “StarHub Smart WiFi Pro”.

The MX4200 is StarHub’s first Wi-Fi 6 router and is the product of a continued partnership with Linksys.

The router combines mesh networking and Wi-Fi 6 technology to promise 4x speed, 4x capacity (compared to Wi-Fi 5) to more than 40 Wi-Fi devices within the home.

The router is especially suited for gamers – who typically subscribe to StarHub’s 2Gbps Fibre Broadband – and desire ultra-low latency and lower ping times.

The 2Gbps plan costs S$62.90 per month.

Those who purchase the MX4200 from StarHub can look forward to firmware upgrades within the year for two additional features that would optimise the home network for gaming and increase speed through intelligent allocation of radio bands (DFS – Dynamic Frequency Selection).

Media briefing by Linksys and StarHub on the Velop MX4200 WiFi 6 mesh router at the company’s office at Level 30, South Beach Tower in Singapore. “Throughout 2020, we have witnessed how pivotal stable connection is for every household as the modern world shifts to normalise home-based learning and working from home. 400 million Southeast Asians – nearly 70 percent of the population – are now online. In Singapore alone, 90 percent of the population are connected online. This increase means demand for faster internet connection will only continue to grow exponentially. Through this partnership with StarHub, we believe that our WiFi 6 offerings will successfully meet consumers’ demand for next generation ultra-high-speed router technology,” said Jenny Ng, General Manager for Asia, Linksys.

Future-Ready WiFi

Linksys Intelligent Mesh is the only mesh system that’s interoperable with its entire portfolio.

It’s flexible and scalable so consumers can expand their network as needs grow, with a simple addition of any Linksys mesh node/router.

Qualcomm Networking Pro 800 platform

With 8 streams of tri-band WiFi 6 connectivity, and a 64-bit 1.4GHz Quad-Core ARM processor powering dynamic data processing and management, the Velop MX4200 provides game-changing network advancements that enhance efficiency, range and power consumption and deliver more capacity for online gaming, video calls and meetings, and 8K streaming on their devices.

Tri-band dynamic backhaul

Unlike some mesh systems that use a dedicated backhaul and limit the number of bands that the user can connect to, Linksys uses a dynamic backhaul, allowing access to all 3 bands throughout the home.

Linksys’ dynamic backhaul technology chooses the best band to connect between nodes.

  1. Quentin Loh says:

Apart from StarHub, where can I buy the MX4200 in Singapore? I’m an M1 subscriber.

    • tech4tea says:

The MX4200 is part of an exclusive deal between Linksys and StarHub, so if you only want 1 router, you can only get it from StarHub, and only if you subscribe to their Fibre Broadband. Linksys does sell their 2-router & 3-router packs but at a higher price. The 2-router pack is priced at S$799 – compared to (S$288 if you’re on a StarHub 2Gbps plan that entitles you to free first MX4200; or S$576 for 2 routers if you’re a StarHub 1Gbps or 500Mbps subscriber).

  2. Bay Yu Tjin says:

So if I purchase the 2-pack (i need to set up a mesh at home) directly from Linksys (I’m also not a StarHub subscriber), can I use it for my Singtel broadband.

    • tech4tea says:

Yes you’ll be able to use it with your Singtel broadband. However, do note that as part of Linksys exclusive arrangement with StarHub, only those routers that were purchased directly through StarHub will get firmware updates later that gives it the gamer optimisation and DFS features.

      • Bay Yu Tjin says:

Thanks, didn’t realise they’ll differentiate between which channle the router is purchased through. What if i buy a router off Carousell from someone who’d gotten it through StarHub, will I still get the 2 features in the pipeline? I heard the DFS is quite good at speeding up the network!

        • tech4tea says:

Yes. As long as you get the update (which will be promulgated not through open Linksys website but through StarHub to the original buyer of the router you purchase off the 3rd party platform).
